O CEPAME emprega m\u00e9todos avan\u00e7ados de caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o, tais como t\u00e9cnicas in-situ com luz sincrotron e a difra\u00e7\u00e3o de raios-X e de el\u00e9trons, para elucidar e compreender as correla\u00e7\u00f5es entre a composi\u00e7\u00e3o, a estrutura, a manufatura e as propriedades dos materiais de engenharia.<br>Atualmente, o centro desenvolve t\u00e9cnicas a plasma (magnetron sputtering, HiPIMS, entre outras) para a deposi\u00e7\u00e3o f\u00edsica (PVD) de revestimentos e tratamentos de superf\u00edcies para resist\u00eancia ao desgaste, \u00e0 corros\u00e3o e \u00e0 oxida\u00e7\u00e3o, baixo atrito, propriedades antimicrobianas, entre outras. Outra importante linha de pesquisa \u00e9 a manufatura de ligas inovadoras, leves e de alto desempenho \u00e0 base de magn\u00e9sio com adi\u00e7\u00e3o de terras raras para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es estruturais, de armazenamento de hidrog\u00eanio e biom\u00e9dicas atrav\u00e9s de processos de fundi\u00e7\u00e3o, lamina\u00e7\u00e3o a quente e soldagem por fric\u00e7\u00e3o e mistura mec\u00e2nica (SFMM). Recentemente, o CEPAME pesquisa a manufatura aditiva a arco (WAAM) de a\u00e7o inoxid\u00e1vel e seus comp\u00f3sitos refor\u00e7ados com part\u00edculas cer\u00e2micas. Outro trabalho inovador foi a pesquisa de a\u00e7os austen\u00edticos inovadores \u00e0 base de Mn e sem adi\u00e7\u00e3o de Ni com efeitos TWIP e TRIP para a ind\u00fastria automotiva, bem como o estudo da sua soldabilidade por tecnologias a arco e tamb\u00e9m pelo processo SFMM. Estes a\u00e7os combinam, de maneira \u00fanica, elevada resist\u00eancia mec\u00e2nica e grande ductilidade com um reduzido custo de processamento.
